Alberni to the Beaufort Crest – via Log Train Trail & Don’s Trail

To the north of  Port Alberni, the Vancouver Island Trail follows the popular Log Train Trail along an old logging railway grade mostly through forest but with periodic views over the farmlands of the Alberni Valley (  The LTT trailhead is on Maebelle Road on the easterly edge of Port Alberni near Highway 4.  At about 7 km, the LTT passes close to the McLean Mill National Historic Site, where you can see old logging equipment, an old sawmill and log-pond, and where an old steam locomotive operates daily in the summer (  Planning is underway for a future campsite at the McLean Mill.

The final route of the VI Trail from the Log Train Trail up to the crest of the Beaufort Range cannot be finalized until agreement(s) are in place with private forest land owners and Regional Districts.  The favored option is that the Trail  will follow/climb logging roads from near the McLean Mill up to the Beaufort crest N of the summit of Mt. Irwin, and then northwards along the Beaufort crest to Cumberland.  (The LTT continues N of the McLean Mill for an additional 17 km.)
